Small businesses still waiting on rates relief

Business rates increased in April, with the rise attracting heavy criticism for the potential impact it would have on some smaller businesses. However, despite the government promising a series of measures, including a rates cap, for the most vulnerable firms, many are yet to receive the assistance promised, according to the BBC.

Business rates specialist CVS has found 24,986 small businesses have lost all, or part, of their small business rates relief. Councils across England told the BBC that they are awaiting further guidance from the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) before they can provide the necessary assistance.

However, a spokesman for the Local Government Association said: “After receiving guidance, councils have now been able to begin working with businesses in their local areas to identify those eligible for this new discretionary relief funding.”

The DCLG confirmed that the promised assistance was on its way to businesses.
