Leftover wine, cake… and five other foods you never knew you could FREEZE
ARE you making the most of your freezer? Most people chuck out loads of things they could save by popping in the ice box.
Move aside frozen meals, ice cream and bread, there are new kids needing some room.
1. Lemon and lime slices
Freezing and then defrosting an entire lemon or lime usually results in a squishy mess that only somewhat resembles the former fresh fruit.
However, kitchen manufacturer Gorenje recommends cutting the fruit into slices or wedges before freezing to avoid the mush stage. They can be used to add a fresh twist to a cold drink.
If you are looking for even more of a citrus zing, try freezing the fruit’s juice in trays and replace your standard ice cubes.
2. Leftover wine
As one of the nation’s most popular cooking ingredients, the avid chefs among us may find themselves with half a bottle of red after making sauces and gravy.
Freezing leftover wine in ice cube trays is the perfect way to stop you throwing it away (or drinking it).
This technique keeps your wine fresh and ready to use when you need it - just take out a cube and add to your dish.
You can also add them to your next glass of the same vin, making for a cool drink that isn’t watered down.
3. Chopped veg
Freezing chopped vegetables is another great way to preserve leftover ingredients.
While many people know about this hack, it’s something that most of us forget and results in a lot of food wastage!

4. Breast milk and pads
When breastfeeding it can sometimes help to express and store breast milk for easy use when you are busy.
Freezing breast milk either in sterilised bags or bottles is a great way to make sure your baby always has a meal on hand.
Breast milk can last up to six months in a home freezer at minus 18 degrees or lower.
You can also freeze your breast pads alongside the milk.
It’s an easy was to provide some relief from the aches and pains that breastfeeding mums know all too well.
5. Grapes and berries
Healthy snacks for kids are hard to come by and fruit often goes bad quickly.
To solve two problems in one, freeze your berries and grapes to make fruit popsicles ready for feeding time at the zoo.
6. Yogurt and crushed fruit
Combining yogurt and crushed fruit is another great way to make a healthy snack seem like a naughty treat, creating a frozen dessert that can (almost) pass for ice cream.
7. Cream-less cakes
When the healthy snack just won’t cut it, cakes (without cream) can be frozen for a fresh and tasty treat later down the line.
Before freezing make sure the cake has cooled completely.
Putting warm cakes in the freezer will result in condensation which can leave you with a soggy mess when defrosted.
