Avoiding errors in technical specifications

Avoiding errors in technical specifications

When constructing a new building, detailed and well-designed technical specifications are critical to ensuring its quality. It is only with such technical specifications that customers can be sure that a developer follows the expected quality. Failure to take care of the technical specifications correctly can possibly jeopardize the end result of the project.

In a recent blog post, the Spanish security company Fermax took a look at the most common mistakes that occur when developing technical specifications and ways to avoid making them.

A single major mistake while designing technical specifications that causes much confusion is working with incomplete information. In fact, this can be an extremely grave mistake since lack of adequate information can lead to confusion for the developer who may not be able to find the right products that comply with the requirements.

“With no doubt, it is best to write technical specifications referring to a specific product,” Fermax said. “In this way, we make sure that we list the features and performance required while remaining realistic. Manufacturers are definitely the ones who can help on creating technical specifications since they are those who know the product best and all its capacities.”

Another aspect of this mistake could be omission of information either deliberately or simply by ignorance. Fermax points out that users must be extremely precise when listing the characteristics that should be part of a product or system. This way one can ensure that the design fulfills every requirement that’s needed and that the developer follows these specifications without choosing low quality products that might result in poor performance.

“If we offer incomplete information in our technical specifications, there is a risk that the developer opts for a lower quality or performance option,” Fermax said.

Similarly it is important to declare in technical specifications the values and benefits of the products or systems, since not doing so will expose the products to conditions of inadequate operation. To explain this, Fermax gave the example of aspects like resistance to varying temperature and waterproof protection.

“The attention to details in our technical specifications will be what really makes the difference in the outcome of our building,” the company said. “We must examine each product specifically and understand which benefits we need from each of them in all situations. It is a laborious job but it is worth. Contacting manufacturers can help us to achieving the best results. Manufacturers or suppliers are the perfect allies. Their knowledge of the product and the sector makes possible to have perfect technical specifications without having to invest lots of time.”

In short, there are a number of factors to consider when undertaking a construction project. Relying on well-known brands with a proven history will definitely make the job a whole lot easier.
