Date Every Day No Matter How Busy You Are

Date night is so important to a relationship, especially once you start having kids. But quality time together is so hard to find. When you are really busy it is easy to put dating your spouse on the bottom of the to do list. Recently Kris came up with an idea to make sure we had ‘date night’ almost every single day. It doesn’t cost anything or take too much time out of your day, and it’s relaxing, so it doesn’t matter how tired you are, you will love it! It has done so much good for our marriage that I just had to share it.

Being married to a medical student, with two kids, living on a limited budget, with lots of work and no family nearby to help, means date night rarely happens. As you add kids and growing careers, hobbies, community responsibilities, etc. to a marriage, it can often mean you get less time together. Logistically it is hard to find time to date every week. When you’ve been married awhile and your life is busy, it is not uncommon for date night to drop on the priority list. But medical school makes our time together especially scant.

Not having date night is a hard aspect of the parenting and med school combo for me to accept. I’m always trying to fix this unfixable problem. So when Kris came up with a solution in the form of a hot tub, I didn’t even blink at the price tag, I just said yes.

Wondering why a hot tub was the answer to our problem? I explained it all in detail here, but the basic idea was that we would soak in the spa every night for at least 10 minutes and use that time to connect and talk, kid free. We wanted to have a sort of mini date every night. I am happy to say, so far our plan has worked.

Since we got our spa we have been having a ‘date night’ daily. I mean kid-free, relaxing, date night. Our dates are a little unconventional when compared to the typical dinner and a movieBut the important thing is we get quality time together every single day. You don’t need a spa to do the same thing we did. I will let you in on exactly how to make sure you get date night every night below.

How to Have GREAT Date Night Every Night

(Even if you’re busy and have kids!)

1. Choose a relaxing environment.

Choose a relaxing spot in your home. If you have a spa, perfect! If not you can easily turn your bath into a spa. Other relaxing places might be the porch, cuddling on the couch or bed or going on a walk around your property, if you have one!

2. Put away your devices

Disconnecting from your devices is the most important step in getting quality time with your spouse every day. Kris and I are both really attached to our phones, but we are also obsessed with sparkling water (we love Aquafina, click here for 25% any Aquafina Sparkling 8pk flavor, 5/21 – 6/17). I find that sipping something refreshing distracts me from my need to check my phone constantly. No phones means more time to talk and connect and less wasteful Facebook scrolling.

3. Grab a snack

At the end of the day we are both hungry, so I find that prepping a quick snack can make our time together even more enjoyable. Sliced fruit pairs perfectly with Aquafina Sparkling Water and a yummy fruit dip. I make a really light and fresh dip with cream cheese, whip cream, vanilla and icing sugar using this recipe:

  1. Put 4 oz of cream cheese in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Scoop in 2 tbsp of icing sugar. Blend with electric beaters till smooth.
  3. Add 1/2 cup of cream and 1 tsp of vanilla.
  4. Beat with the electric beaters till it is light and fluffy.
  5. Serve chilled with fresh fruit and enjoy!

This fruit dip recipe is so easy and SOOOOOO good! I love making a batch of it and stuffing our floating spa tray with fruit, drinks and dip, to enjoy in the hot tub.

4. Set up a TV show for the kids and grab the baby monitor.

I minimize TV time while Kris is away, then I have no guilt using it to get some alone time with Kris when he gets home. We have the baby monitor always ready to go, so we can keep an eye on the kids. We’ve got two cameras set up so we can watch them both in different places (usually Zander is asleep when we go out!). Once that is set up I stick the baby monitor in a plastic baggie to protect it from the water and we bring it out to the tub with us. We never used a baby monitor with Zoey, but with two kids it has been SO vital. It gives us time alone even when the kids aren’t sleeping.

5. Talk, laugh, flirt, listen, cry.

Once you are all set up, relax, talk, eat, drink and enjoy some time alone. Just share your day with each other. Or pretend you are young and dating again and have a good make out session! Whatever you need to get you through all the time you spend away from each other, or busy with work and kids. Our ‘date nights’ often only last 15 minutes. But that uninterrupted alone time every day gets us through!

Like I said, you don’t need a spa to make sure you get quality alone time every day with your spouse. But it has sure helped us to make time together a priority! It gives us that extra motivation that our extremely exhausted selfs are lacking. When we finally are together at the end of the day we are usually both so tired, all we do is watch TV. The spa is SO relaxing and rejuvenating to our sore muscles that we can’t say no. Quality time, plus time to relax and recharge, it is the perfect combo.

We pretty much never go out to the spa without snacks and sparkling water. I am not exaggerating when I say this – I have tried every single sparkling water in existence and my absolute favorite is Cherry Dragon Fruit Aquafina Sparkling… It is just sparkling water and natural flavors (so 0 calories, 0 sugar, and 0 artificial flavors). But it has a stronger flavor than most sparkling waters, in my opinion. We bought an 8-pack at Target a couple days ago and it is already gone 🙈. They are having taste testings at a few Target stores. You can try the new Dragon Fruit Cherry and Mango Pineapple flavors. Definitely worth going to if you haven’t tried them yet.

Anyway, the past three years have brought so many changes to our marriage. Two kids, med school and a move across the country. I am so happy to have found a little more balance in our relationship and other responsibilities with our new version of date night. It is fun to reconnect while sipping refreshing drinks and relaxing our sore muscles!

  1. Thanks ever so much for sharing your post, a great read. My husband and I don’t have kids yet, but both are working hard doing other things that date nights aren’t regular. I love your idea of having daily date time, it’s so important to switch off and relax.

The hot tub in the garden sounds perfect, great way to relax and just simply be together and unwind.

Thanks for sharing again, really do like your blog.
