CHARLESTON, S.C. – Cody Deason tossed 6 1/3 shutout innings and Kyle Lewis went 4 for 4 at the plate as the Arizona Wildcats beat College of Charleston 6-0 on Sunday at the Ballpark at Patriots Point to win the series.
 
The win improved Arizona to 33-17 and dropped College of Charleston to 24-27. It marked Arizona's third shutout of the season and first since blanking Arkansas on March 3.
 
Deason went 6 1/3 innings, giving up six hits and one walk, while striking out four on 99 pitches. He lowered his ERA to 4.15 and improved his record to 4-2 on the season. Tylor Megill finished off the shutout, tossing 2 2/3 innings to earn his second save of the season. Lewis, who went 2 for 4 with an RBI on Mother's Day last year, went 4 for 4 with three runs scored this year to up his average to .271.
 
Unlike the first two games of the series, Arizona struck first Sunday and it was Lewis, who started it off with a single. He then swiped second base and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from shortstop Louis Boyd. That flipped the lineup over for leadoff man Cal Stevenson.
 
The junior right fielder followed Boyd's lead and dropped down a safety squeeze sacrifice bunt to score Lewis from third and give Arizona a 1-0 lead. It was Stevenson's 26^th RBI of the season and first of the weekend.
 
That remained the score until the sixth inning when the Cats added to their lead. With one out, Jared Oliva and Alfonso Rivas put together back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners with one out. JJ Matijevic then lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to score Oliva and give Deason a two-run lead.
 
An inning later, Arizona stretched its lead, scoring two more runs off Cougars reliever Justin Baker. With one out in the seventh, Ryan Haug, who made his first start of the season in left field, was hit by a pitch. Mitchell Morimoto then came on to pinch-run for Haug and moved to second base on a single from Lewis.
 
Boyd then dropped in an RBI single to shallow right-center to score Morimoto and make it 3-0. Lewis was able to make it to third base on the hit. Stevenson then dropped down his second safety squeeze bunt to score Lewis again and make it 4-0.
 
Deason started the seventh inning and retired the first batter. He then gave up a one-out double to first baseman Ari Sechopoulos, which ended his outing. Rio Gomez came on and walked the first batter he faced to put two men on. The lefty got ahead to the next batter 1-2, but coach Jay Johnson opted to bring in right-hander Tylor Megill to finish off the at-bat.
 
The move paid off. Megill got the batter to ground out and then the next batter, Dupree Hart, popped up to end the inning. Megill allowed the first two men to reach in the eighth, but got a double play and a strikeout to escape any damage. He then threw a scoreless ninth inning to lock down the shutout.
 
Stevenson finished 1 for 3 with two RBI on the sacrifice bunts. The Cats also totaled four stolen bases with Lewis swiping two and Morimoto and Stevenson each recording one.
 
The Cats return to action Thursday when they travel to Arizona State for a three-game series at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
