Research: Waiting Encourages Healthier Vending Choices

April 3, 2017

Brad Appelhans, an associate professor of preventative medicine at Rush University Medical Center, designed a device for vending machines that causes a 25-second delay before releasing popular processed snacks. However, healthier options in the machines are instantly available. NPR reports DISC, or Delays to Influence Snack Choice, resulted in about a 5 percent increase in purchase of healthy snacks as a result of the increase in wait time.
