Reader Project CNC or Scroll Saw

With the way technology in the home workshop has grown over the past decade you might jump to assume that this sign was created with a CNC router. In fact, this was made using a technique called intarsia. If you’re not familiar with the term, intarsia is a form of wood inlaying (similar to marquetry) that started before the 7th century. This woodworking technique uses various sizes, shapes & species of wood fitted together to create a mosaic-like image with the illusion of depth. Once an artist decides on a pattern, each piece of wood is individually cut, shaped, finished and then fitted together like a jigsaw puzzle.

When you look at the detail in the image above, you can quickly appreciate exactly how much work went into this piece. It was submitted to us by WoodChuck from Ocala, FL. He used a scroll saw to cut each piece of this 24” diameter logo. The background is made out of Red Oak and Jabba is Yellow Heart.
