Study finds that average life expectancy will surpass 90 in South Korea by 2030

A new study found that life expectancy will surpass 90 by 2030. The catch? Right now, that's only true if you're a woman living in South Korea.

The country is projected to have the highest life expectancy in the world over the next decade. South Korean men are expected to live to around 84 years old by the same time.

As for the United States, while longevity is expected to increase, the target life expectancy by 2030 still falls well below those in countries such as South Korea, Japan, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the Netherlands. American men and women are projected to live until 79 and 83, respectively.

As Vox points out, "The US has lagged behind its peers in increases in life expectancy (for both men and women) for at least a decade, despite gains from the 1970s to early 2000s. During that time, deaths from alcohol, drug use, and mental health disorders have risen dramatically in many parts of the country, while progress on heart disease has been stalling."
