Cats Complete Sweep of Cal for 22nd Straight Win

Box Score BERKELEY, Calif. -- Fourth-ranked Arizona completed the sweep of California on Sunday, falling one run shy shutting out the Golden Bears for the weekend with a 6-1 victory to close out the series at Levine-Fricke Field.

The Cats improved to a perfect 9-0 in league play with their third straight conference sweep, bringing their winning streak to 22 games to improve to 37-1 on the year.

Danielle O'Toole picked up the win to get to 19-1 on the year. O'Toole, who tossed 3.1 perfect innings to open the game, allowed one run on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks in the outing.

O'Toole shut out Cal on Friday night before Taylor McQuillin shut out the Bears on Saturday. Cal's run in the fifth inning denied Arizona of its first shutout conference road weekend in a quarter of a century.

Jessie Harper homered again for the Wildcats, her second of the weekend and Pac-12-lead-tying 12th of 2017. Her three-run homer was the big blow for the UA offense, which plated its six runs on eight hits.

Ashleigh Hughes drove in two runs and Mandie Perez added an RBI for the Wildcats.

Reyna Carranco led the Cats with two hits, her fourth multi-hit game of Pac-12 play after having zero in nonconference action.

Hughes gave the Wildcats the early lead in the second inning with a two-out RBI infield single to plate Tamara Statman from third.

After back-to-back walks opened up the top of the third, the Bears went to the bullpen. Harper greeted new Cal pitcher Stephanie Trzcinski with a three-run homer off the scoreboard in left.

In the fifth, Arizona loaded the bases with one out. Hughes picked up her second RBI with a grounder to short and Perez followed with an RBI single to put the Cats up 6-0.

Cal scored its first run of the series in the bottom half, cashing in on a leadoff double to cut the UA lead to 6-1.

Up Next: Arizona returns home to host Stanford for a three-game series at Hillenbrand this Friday-Sunday. The Cats and the Cardinal open up the series on Friday at 6 p.m. MST.
