Cats Complete Sweep of Trojans

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Wildcats completed a three-game sweep of USC on Sunday afternoon at Hi Corbett Field, topping the Trojans 8-1 in front of 3,658 fans.

Rio Gomez tossed five scoreless innings to earn his third win of the season and Kyle Lewis and Louis Boyd each had a pair of hits. The end result was a sweep of the Trojans, which moved Arizona to 20-7 overall, 5-4 in Pac-12 play and 16-0 at home this season. USC dropped to 15-11 and 4-5 in league play.

After having to play catch up on Saturday, the Cats opened the scoring in the second inning Sunday. After Mitchell Morimoto and Cesar Salazar coaxed back-to-back one-out walks, Boyd dumped in a bloop single to center with two outs to score Morimoto and make it 1-0.

Leading 1-0, the Cats added three more in the third to give Gomez more run support. Jared Oliva started the inning with a walk and moved to second on a ground out. With two outs, Morimoto lined a single to center to score Oliva. Salazar followed with an opposite-field double to plate Morimoto. The two-out hit parade continued when the next batter, Kyle Lewis singled to score Salazar and make it 4-0.

Gomez worked scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth and the Cats offense went back to work in the bottom of the fifth. Morimoto started the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Salazar. Lewis then brought Morimoto home with his second-straight RBI single. Boyd followed with a walk and then both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. Cal Stevenson lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Lewis.

The next batter, Alfonso Rivas, doubled down the left field line to score Boyd. The Cats added a fourth run in the inning when Rivas scored on an error by the second baseman off the bat from Jared Oliva.

That made the score 8-0, and the Cats cruised from there. Michael Flynn tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings behind Gomez, and Cameron Ming went 1 2/3 giving up just a solo home run to USC's Corey Dempster. Landon Faulkner came on to get the final three outs.

Morimoto went 1 for 2 with a pair of walks and three runs scored. Lewis and Boyd each went 2 for 3. Lewis drove in two and scored a run. Boyd drove in one and scored one.

Gomez scattered five hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out one, tossing 92 pitches.

All total, 11,599 fans made their way to Hi Corbett for the three games, seeing the Cats move over the .500 mark in conference play. It was Arizona's first sweep of USC since 2013 and marked the first time since 2005 that the Wildcats won the series against both UCLA and USC in the same season. Additionally, Arizona's 16-0 start at home is its best since starting 21-0 at home in 1998.

Arizona will now host ASU on Tuesday night in a non-conference affair.
