WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - New Hanover County officials will unveil the county's newest splash pad during a grand opening ceremony at Hugh MacRae Park on Saturday, April 1 at noon.

The splash pad is the final piece of the park's $750,000 all-inclusive playground project, which was funded by Trillium Health's Play Together grant. The rest of the playground opened last July.

"We are excited to kick off the inaugural splash pad season on April 1," said Parks & Gardens Director Tara Duckworth. "Hugh MacRae Park is a great community gathering spot for all ages and we look forward to citizens enjoying these new amenities for years to come."

The splash pad, a 2,700-square-foot wet-play area, features multiple easy-to-use water elements and is accessible for children of all ages and abilities, including those utilizing mobility devices. After the grand opening, the seasonal splash pad will be open to the public daily from 9 a.m. to sunset, April through October.

A loaner water wheelchair will be available through Parks & Gardens for use by children whose mobility devices cannot tolerate moisture. Citizens can request use of the water wheelchair by contacting the parks office at (910) 798-7275.

The rest of the playground includes slides, swings and other equipment that children of all ages can use, and there is also equipment that makes the playground accessible to children with special needs.
