Medical Capital Innovation contest picks 27 competitors

The teams will compete for $100,000 in cash prizes and mentoring opportunities at the HIMSS Innovation Center in Cleveland.

More than two dozen professional and collegiate teams have been selected to compete in the inaugural Medical Capital Innovation Competition, which aims to help teams looking to commercialize their data-driven technologies to improve healthcare.

The 27 chosen competitors have developed tools to enable better patient engagement and compliance, EHR optimization, clinical decision support and more. They'll be judged on their technologies' commercial and technical viability, as well as their teams' technical competence, business acumen, industry knowledge and more.

The Global Center for Health Innovation sponsors the challenge – alongside Cuyahoga County, BioEnterprise and HIMSS – as a way to provide prize money, mentoring and access to business advisors from across the industry, to innovators making use of data to solve challenges across healthcare.

The two-day Medical Capital Innovation Competition, "All Things Data in Healthcare," will be held next week in Cleveland in the HIMSS Innovation Center at GCHI, April 25 and 26.

"The Innovation Competition attracted 180 applications from industry professionals and university students," HIMSS executive vice president Carla Smith said in a statement. "I am thrilled to see the level of interest and expertise in this first inaugural Medical Capital Innovation Competition from applicants and I am especially looking forward to observing the new health IT solutions that develop."
