A new stable update of the open-source and cross-platform SMPlayer media player was announced recently, versioned 17.4.2, for all supported operating systems, including GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows.

SMPlayer 17.4.2 is now the latest stable release of the popular media player application, and it looks like it ships with various exciting improvements and new features. One of these is support for using the ffhevcvdpau decoder from the MPlayer project, but only on Linux-based operating systems.

Another new feature of the SMPlayer 17.4.2 release is the implementation of an option in the View -> OSD menu to allow the user to choose to view times with milliseconds. The MPV backend was improved as well in this update to avoid various crashes reported by users lately.

More MPV improvements land in SMPlayer

In addition to the changes mentioned above, SMPlayer 17.4.2 fixes the thumbnail generator to be compatible with some older versions of the MPV open-source multimedia player, and addresses an issue with the position of the video, which is now remembered when it is opened via drag and drop.

Other than that, it looks like SMPlayer 17.4.2 comes with an updated installer for Microsoft Windows operating system, which will no longer install the MPV media player on Windows XP because of the obvious reasons that MPV is no longer compatible with the respective operating system series.

SMPlayer 17.4.2 is available for download for GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows operating systems right now from our website if you want to install it on your personal computer. We always recommend using the latest version of the software installed on your PC, so make sure that you update SMPlayer as soon as possible.
