14 DAY TRIAL // KDE released today the fourth maintenance update to the KDE Plasma 5.9 desktop environment series, which some of you are using on your Linux-based operating systems.
Coming approximately three weeks after the release of version 5.9.3, KDE Plasma 5.9.4 is here to address a total of 35 issues reported by users since then across many components, including Plasma Discover, Plasma Desktop, Plasma Workspace, Plasma Networkmanager (plasma-nm), plasma-integration, KWin, KScreenlocker, and System Settings. "Today KDE releases a bugfix update to KDE Plasma 5, versioned 5.9.4. Plasma 5.9 was released in January with many feature refinements and new modules to complete the desktop experience. This release adds a two week's worth of new translations and fixes from KDE's contributors. The bugfixes are typically small but important," said the devs.
KDE Plasma 5.9.5 is coming April 25 and is the last in the series
The KDE Plasma 5.9 desktop environment will receive one more point release, namely KDE Plasma 5.9.5, which is currently scheduled to land on April 25, 2017. Being the last in the series, the KDE Plasma 5.9.5 update will also mark the end of life for the KDE Plasma 5.9 desktop, which means that users will have to upgrade to KDE Plasma 5.10.
Fear not, because the KDE developers are already working hard on the new features of the KDE Plasma 5.10 desktop environment, which will get a Beta release approximately two weeks after the release of KDE Plasma 5.9.5, on May 11, and you'll be able to upgrade your KDE Plasma 5.9 installations at the end of May.
Until then, we recommend updating to today's KDE Plasma 5.9.4 maintenance release as soon as the new packages land in the stable software repositories of your favorite GNU/Linux distribution. Also keep in mind that you can migrate to the long-term supported KDE Plasma 5.8 series, which is supported until April 2018.
