IBD @ SXSW: Case Foundation Talks Impact Investing 101

X

Music, film and tech junkies love South by Southwest. The Wall Street set might note that it's also fertile ground for new investing initiatives.

The Case Foundation, headed by husband-and-wife team Steve and Jean Case, is in Austin to spread the word about impact investing, i.e. investing in good causes, as well as inclusive entrepreneurship. Jean, CEO of the foundation, joined IBD's Alissa Coram to discuss. (Steve, the co-founder of AOL, is the organization's chairman.)

When asked if impact investing is akin to providing microloans, Case said it's "taking that and blowing it out," describing it as "investments in companies or funds that provide both a financial and a social return."

Today's generation of entrepreneurs "want to do more than just provide a shareholder return," she said, and that's matched by a new generation of investors — particularly women and millennials — who "want to align their capital with their values."

Even big players like BlackRock (BLK) and Bain Capital have entered the space, Case told Coram.

At SXSW, the Case Foundation has also partnered with Facebook's (FB) Oculus to showcase "VR for good" experiences to attendees. Watch the full video for more and keep up to speed with the rest of IBD's coverage of the festival at http://investors.com/sxsw.
