Alejandro Diaz informs Softpedia today about the general availability of Escuelas Linux 5.2, the newest and most advanced version of his Bodhi/Ubuntu-based GNU/Linux distribution designed for educational purposes.

Escuelas Linux 5.2 is more of a maintenance update to stabilize the operating system and make various improvements to the 5.x series. It includes some of the latest GNU/Linux technologies and applications, including the recently released LibreOffice 5.3.1 office suite, as well as Google Chrome 57 and Chromium 56 web browsers.

Users should be aware of the fact that the Google Chrome 57 web browser is available only as a 64-bit application, while Chromium 56 is a 32-bit one. Escuelas Linux 5.2 also includes the Chromium-based Vivaldi 1.7 web browser, along with OnlyOffice Desktop Editors 4.2.5 (64-bit) and GeoGebra 5.0.341.

Users can easily update from Escuelas Linux 5.1.x series

Among other improvements implemented in the Escuelas Linux 5.2 release, we can mention the latest Adobe Flash Player plugin, the Caph app, which was missing from the previous update, Wine improvements so that Windows apps won't default to the Spanish language, and the addition of the powerful Shotwell photo manager.

Under the hood, Escuelas Linux 5.2 is powered by the Linux 4.4 LTS kernel. "In the 64-bit ISO image we now include the most recent Linux kernel to date (4.10.3), to be easily installed in places where it would be needed, to replace the one installed by default (4.4). The deb packages are located in the debs/other/kernel4.10 directory," explains the dev.

If you're using the Escuelas Linux 5.1.x series, specifically versions 5.1, 5.1.1, or 5.1.2, you can now update your installations to Escuelas Linux 5.2 using the Update Packs that you can download from our website for 32-bit or 64-bit platforms. The Escuelas Linux 5.2 ISO images are also available for those who want to deploy the OS on new PCs.

To update, simply download the Update Pack that corresponds to your hardware architecture (32-bit or 64-bit), open the file manager, go to the Downloads directory, right-click on the update file, choose "Extract here," open the extracted folder, double click on the "ActualizaEscuelasLinux" file, and then click on "Execute" and choose "English" or "Spanish," depending on the language you're using.
