The brightest and most gifted pupils are shunning university and questioning its value, according to the head teacher of an independent school.

Tim Firth, head of Wrekin College in Shropshire, said university was no longer an automatic choice for high-achieving teenagers and that he did not consider it the ultimate path to success.
