World's First Manned, Bipedal Robot Is Here! (And It Looks Like Straight Out Of A Sci-Fi Movie)

Robots have always been a fascination for humans. Especially manned robots are a classic in many sci-fi movies.
The idea of sitting inside a massive robot and controlling it like a suit is just too awesome!

Now, this sci-fi fantasy has actually become a reality ...

Meet the Method-2, a 4-meter bipedal manned robot!


The metal giant has been created by South Korean company Hankook Mirae, it weighs 1.5 tons and cost over $200 million to build!

A human can sit inside it and control the robot's limbs with a joystick, similar to manned robots we know from movies like "Avatar".
That's because one of the robot's designers is Vitaly Bulgarov, a Science Fiction Expert that has worked on Hollywood Movies like Transformers, Terminator, Robocop or Ghost in the Shell.

With its arms stretched out, the metal giant measures 23 feet of width.
Hankook Mirae plans to start selling these robots starting at the end of this year, with a price tag of $8 million.

The robot was first unveiled last december in South Korea, but THIS WEEK, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos got to try it and show it off.

Last monday (March 20), Amazon was holding the top-secret Mars Conference, an annual invite-only event created to celebrate machine learning, robots, home automation and robotics.
CEO and billionaire Jeff Bezos, one of the top 5 richest people in the world, showcased the robot, and seemed to be thrilled about it.
“Why do I feel so much like Sigourney Weaver?” he asked jokingly, as a reference to James Cameron's Sci-Fi classic "Aliens" from 1986.

The Robot has been created to solve 'real world problems.'

It's intended to be used in areas too hazardous for humans to approach.
Also, it's a prototype for different technologies that will allow the sci-fi experts to build robots with even more features and an even bigger size in the future.

It might still be a long way of development and improvement for manned robots like these, but there's definitely a big potential.

Looks exciting. Who needs flying taxis with this.

True! The possibilities with this are almost endless!

I'd take the flying taxis for transportation any day over these. There just isn't enough room on the surface on earth, we need to use the space available in air or go underground like Musk is planning - tunnels for traffic. Electric only I'd imagine. Or we can go full transformer with these, make them fly also ;)

Maybe these could fly too. That will be good.

First? no man!

Very interesting, I didn't know about this one yet!
But since it's not bipedal and doesn't "walk" but rather drive, I guess that's why the method-2 claimed the title as world's first manned bipedal robot.

What if it falls over? It seems pretty unstable to me. Does anybody know what kinds of hazardous environments that it is supposed to be used in?

A few come to mind:

  • clearing rubble from demolished buildings
  • working around volcanoes
  • moving stuff around in a junk yard
  • moving hazardous waste

Unfortunately, I don't think it would be useful in its current form for any of these things. You would need some sort of shielding for use around radiation, air filtration or on-board air supply for use around dangerous fumes, just to name a few considerations.

True, there are definitely lots of improvements to be made still.
As far as I know there's no concrete purpose for it yet, but it will definitely be used in areas or for tasks that would be too dangerous for a human to interact in.

The Future is here Kids!

Machines are going to play an ever increasing role in the future. Hopefully we can keep them tamed. I followed. :)
