Cats Score Season High in Runs in Win Over Hartford

TUCSON, Ariz. – Alfonso Rivas hit his second career home run, JC Cloney picked up his fourth win in four starts and the Arizona Wildcats scored a season high in runs Friday night, topping Hartford 21-5 in front of 2,861 fans at Hi Corbett Field.

The Cats had 19 hits, saw six players register multi-hit games and scored their most runs since a 23-1 win over Sacramento State last season.

Leadoff hitter Mitchell Morimoto went 3 for 5 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base and is now hitting .480 through 13 games this season. JJ Matijevic also had three hits, going 3 for 4 with a pair of RBI and runs scored to go with a stolen base. Rivas finished 2 for 3 with two RBI, the home run and two walks.

Cal Stevenson, Cesar Salazar and Cameron Cannon all had two-hit nights in the win.

Cloney went five innings, giving up three earned runs, striking out two and not issuing a walk over 76 pitches. Luke Soroko pitched the final four innings, not allowing an earned run, and picked up his first career save.

Hartford's Erik Ostberg opened the scoring with a two-run home run to centerfield in the first inning. Ostberg's home run ended Cloney's streak without an earned run at 38 innings. The lefty hadn't surrendered an earned run all season before Ostberg's home run and went the final 16 innings of last season without giving up an earned run.

But Arizona responded to Ostberg's home run right away with a five-run first inning. Stevenson started the rally with a one-out walk and moved all the way to third on a single from Rivas. Following Rivas' single, Matijevic laced a double to score Stevenson and cut the lead to 2-1. Nick Quintana then reached on an error to score Rivas and tie the game.

Two batters later, Salazar tripled with two outs to score Matijevic and Quintana and make it 4-2. Cannon, a freshman, followed with a base hit two pitches later to score Salazar and cap Arizona's five-run first.

The offensive onslaught didn't stop there. The Cats added two more in the second and put up another five spot in the third inning. In the second, Morimoto started it off with a single, before stealing second. Stevenson then singled to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Rivas and Matijevic followed with back-to-back walks to plate Morimoto and make it 6-2.

The Hawks got a run back in the top of the third, but the Cats' bats were more than up to the challenge. Cannon led off the third with a single and scored on a one-out triple from Morimoto. Stevenson followed with an RBI single to score Morimoto and make it 8-3. With two outs, the Cats loaded the bases for Jared Oliva, who singled through the left side to plate two more runs. Salazar singled as the next batter to cap the scoring.

An inning later, after the Hawks scored a run in the top half of the fourth, the Cats plated two more on the Rivas home run to make it 14-4.

Arizona added its final seven runs in the eighth inning with Sawyer Gieseke, Casey Bowman, Ryan Haug, Shane Martinez, Cory Voss and Randy Labaut all registering at least one RBI. Labaut had two plate appearances in the inning and produced an RBI each time.

Soroko went four innings, allowing two hits, one unearned run and striking out four over 50 pitches. Like Cloney, he didn't issue a walk.

The Cats have now scored double-digit runs 10 times this season and have their team batting average at .354 with 50 extra-base hits in 13 games.

Arizona will look to win the series Saturday afternoon. First pitch is set for 2 p.m., with right-hander Michael Flynn getting the start for the Wildcats.
