Nudity on TV – it's always been a hot topic, as it were. While some may say character development sometimes requires the clothes to come off, others will believe such scenes serve only to titillate. (Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with that.)
Of course, it's usually female actors getting very, very naked rather than their male co-stars, a consequence of industry sexism. But we have seen a rise of willies on screen in recent years. So… yay?
One could argue that the big cable shows like Game of Thrones or Masters of Sex require a great deal of major nakedness, but the following TV moments just seemed a bit... unnecessary.
1. GAME OF THRONES
The moment: Emilia Clarke's Daenerys and her dodgy brother in season one
What's wrong with it: You could say that this early scene was to show how weak Daenerys was against her controlling bro, but it feels as if the writers needed a flash of boob to spice up the long, drawn-out scenes.
It made more sense later on when she was in a similar state of undress with her new husband Khal Drogo as it showed her genuine lack of power. This, however, was just an excuse for making the most of the HBO licence. Emilia has since said how she hates nude scenes, so don't expect any more in season 7. Daenerys isn't the only one who's been empowered by success.
2. GORDON RAMSAY'S HOTEL HELL
The moment: Lots and lots of shower scenes
What's wrong with it: The arse. Gordon's cold bottom is seen again and again in this reality documentary series. It's as if Gordon can't resist showing off his behind.
Producer: "We have to test out the shower now."
Gordon: "Alright, I'll get stark naked."
Producer: "Nah, we can just film through the..."
Gordon: "Shut up, you donut! Give them what they want, yes? F**k me…"
3. WAR AND PEACE
The moment: PENIS ON THE BEACH!
What's wrong with it: War and peen, more like. It just came out of nowhere. On the BBC. On a Sunday night! As Russian soldiers frolicked in the sea, we were suddenly confronted with a schlong while tucking into our roast dinner. Thank God it wasn't toad in the hole.
4. TRUE DETECTIVE
The moment: Alexandra Daddario greets a Woody
What's wrong with it: It served absolutely no purpose, other than to show some boobs at a very early point in the series. 'That's right viewers, we can show stuff like this, cool huh?' It was even more ridiculous than Woody Harrelson managing to pull Alexandra Daddario.
5. DEXTER
The moment: "Pardon my tits"
What's wrong with it: What's right with it? Dexter's new fling Lila (Jaime Murray) is casually looking in the fridge (naked, of course), and when his sister asks who the hell she is, she responds with the immortal line: "Pardon my tits." You don't get that in Downton Abbey.
6. BLACK SAILS
The moment: Meet Blackbeard
What's wrong with it: It's essentially an excuse for a very cheeky gag involving a lady's private parts. Arguably, this is actually better than a lot of scenes from Black Sails – which potentially has more nudity than Thrones and Masters of Sex put together. Do we HAVE to see a constant stream of shagging on the rough seas? Not that we'd dare tell Captain Flint to stop it.
7. TRUE BLOOD
The moment: Nearly all of Jason's "fangbanger" girlfriend Amy's scenes
What's wrong with it: We'll let True Blood off a little bit, as there's normally a reason for all the crazy nakedness – as the vampires are notoriously sex-driven, and their blood gets humans all wild and that.
But this shouldn't have applied so much to Lizzy Caplan's Amy, who seemed to just walk around topless all the time, high on V or not. At least she has a (sort of) reason to be topless in Masters of Sex.
8. UNDERCOVER
The moment: Adrian Lester gets cramp at the wrong time
What's wrong with it: In what was a funny little scene, suspiciously eagle-eyed viewers saw Lester's private parts make a cameo in the new BBC drama. It may have been an accident, or it may have been an opportunity to turn the tables a little bit. Though we doubt Tom Hiddleston's arse in The Night Manager was as accidental.
9. THE SOPRANOS
The moment: All the Bada Bing club scenes
What's wrong with it: Yes, we know these are ruthless gangsters. Yes, we know it's a strip club. Yes, we know it's HBO. But did they have to show so many boobs in so many episodes? Probably.
10. NAKED JUNGLE
The moment: All of it
What's wrong with it: OK, Cheggers and the contestants being naked was kind of pivotal to the whole format of this Channel 5 game show – but we'd argue that the entire show was gratuitous in the sense that IT DIDN'T NEED TO HAPPEN AT ALL.
11. ALLY MCBEAL
The moment: Car wash sex
What's wrong with it: Ally and her one-off lover may not have been fully naked, but this scene was so ridiculous we're including it. In what felt like a dream sequence, Ally just casually has a passionate romp with a ripped car wash attendant, with suds and soap going everywhere.
