Stremio is a neat service that’s become integral to my home theatre PC (HTPC) set up. While I’ve got no shortage of streaming options between my Plex server, premium streaming providers like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, and physical media collection (yes, I still have DVDs and Blu-Rays), Stremio fills a much needed void. Rather than competing with existing streaming services, Stremio compliments them.

The Stremio platform, available on macOS, PC, Linux, Android, and iOS, is comprised of two main components. There’s the content aggregate similar to the comprehensive search feature on the Roku. This finds where you can watch films and TV shows, and in some cases offers in-app streaming with certain providers. Additionally, Stremio boasts a beefy lineup of live TV streaming from a variety of sources. But there’s also a real-time torrent streaming feature like that of the late Popcorn Time.

In a March 10, 2017 blog post, Stremio announced its forthcoming Stremio Circle set top box. The forthcoming set top box sports premium specs:

  • HDMI port
  • Two USB ports
  • Mini USB port
  • LAN
  • Dual0band AC wi-fi
  • microSD card slot
  • 1 GB RAM

The system on a chip (SoC) is a S905X. Stremio Circle is poised to handle H265 and VP9 formats so it’s suited to support 4K video. You use your phone as a remote, and have instant access to Stremio on your TV. There’s no word yet on a release date, but Stremio states that the Circle “will be available to purchase at the end of 2017.” Stremio’s Circle retails for a mere $59, and you can hop on the preorder list here.
