Kathryn Lively is an award-winning writer and editor, Whovian, and Rush (the band) fan. She loves chocolate and British crisps and is still searching for a good US dealer of Japanese Kit Kat bars.

Tell us something about yourself that isn’t in your bio

I have seen every episode of M*A*S*H at least four times. It remains my go-to show when I’m feeling down. Next time it comes up on Netflix I plan to binge again.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

I would say the most difficult thing for me is sticking to an outline, for stories where I have the book plotted out. I’ll start out fine, merrily along the path, then a thought will occur to me that changes the course of the story. Naturally, it means the entire outline changes and I have to figure out there the book should actually go from start to finish. LOL

Who are your two go-to authors for a great story?

I’m currently reacquainting myself with Carrie Fisher’s fiction (she was a great influence as a writer), and I enjoy romance authors like Kristan Higgins, Brenda Novak, and Susan Mallery.

The apocalypse has happened and you could only save your two favorite books. One of them is yours. What are the two books you saved?

Agh! It’s like the desert island question. Can’t pick just one. Well, of my books I’d save Rock Deadly because that story has a special place in my life – I was inspired to write after attending a music convention and meeting some amazing people.

As for the other book: I would pick Valley of the Dolls. It’s a sensational story, yes, but Jackie Susann had a way with storytelling. If it’s the only book to read, I want to enjoy myself.

Sex gone wrong: Great sex scenes are a wonderful thing, but what if the romantic moment isn’t all it’s cracked up to be? Sometimes, it’s not ‘Always Sexy’ and I’ve asked Kathryn to give us something we don’t usually get in fiction…

Here you go, ripped from today’s headlines:

Just as she teetered over the edge into ecstatic oblivion, Jill sniffed the air and frowned. Then her face contorted into a mask of disgust. She tore off the comforter and rolled off Jack, snatching her robe as she stormed away.

“Really, Jack?” she barked, waving her hand to dissipate the noxious fumes. “You couldn’t hold it in?”

Note to self, on Taco Tuesdays, they would have sex before dinner, going forward.

Tease Me!

This is from my latest, IF YOU WANT IT, now on pre-order from Decadent Publishing.

To her surprise, rather than expand on his last remark he asked, “Can I see what it was you were drawing on the drive up?”

“Oh. Uh, sure.” She’d forgotten about that. She’d completed the quickie sketch as they pulled into the parking space next to the building, and now she felt skittish about showing Cory. He’d call her out on balking, definitely, and as she’d worked on the page, her confidence had flowed through her pencil.

With the drawing done, the disconnect affected her. She wasn’t shy about her artwork, but something so personal, to share even with a lover…

“Hang on a sec.” She fished in her bag and brought out the notebook then turned to the last page. She gazed a moment on the self-portrait, an update of her kneeling cheesecake pinup persona, before passing it to Cory. “I suppose I was going for realism today. I used to see a fantasy version of myself I didn’t expect to achieve and figured the dream would sustain me during dark days. I’m fine with myself, more now than I was, so the real me should supplant it.”

Cory’s smile spread wide. The tip of his tongue came out to tease his upper lip. He looked delicious in that moment, teased and aroused by something she’d done. Winnie surrendered to the warmth enveloping her and reached for her beer to take a cooling sip.

“Winnie, you are my fantasy,” he said quietly. “This is gorgeous. It’s you. It would make a great tattoo.”

Oh lord. “My body inked on your skin. Are you serious?” Where would he put it? Somewhere a T-shirt couldn’t hide it?

Her grip on the notebook loosened and before she realized it, Cory held it close to him. He turned in his chair, too, effectively blocking it with his body. “Why not?” he asked. “I wouldn’t be the first person to have a loved one as a tat, and this is amazing work.”

“Uh, thanks.” That he actually considered her caricature flattered her, but a tattoo was forever. A commitment, an acknowledgement that the design on your skin would stay with you. One couldn’t make a decision like this lightly. Satin had known for a while, apparently, what she wanted on her back. Cory had put some thought into his LACES design.

A tat of her on him. It wasn’t a wedding ring, but it meant something to him.

To her as well.

Author in Progress: What’s next, Kathryn?

I have started the third book in my ExStream Love series, which is out with Totally Bound. Book one, FINISH WHAT YOU STARTED, is about two former child stars who reconnect on a new show. The second, DRIVE ME WILD, is about a diva actress making a comeback while flirting with an aspiring screenwriter. Book three, DO IT AGAIN, reunites an 80s rock chick with her first manager, and her first crush.

Where can we find you? Your new fans want to know!
