Cats Use Big Offensive Day to Top Colonels

TUCSON, Ariz. – Freshman Cameron Cannon had four hits and Alfonso Rivas and Jared Oliva each added three as Arizona topped Eastern Kentucky 18-4 Sunday afternoon at Hi Corbett Field.

The Cats have now scored 34 runs in their past two games, their highest total in back-to-back affairs since 2008, when the team also scored 34 in back-to-back games against UNLV and South Alabama.

Following a 16-13 win Saturday, Arizona wasted no time getting starting pitcher Rio Gomez plenty of run support. The Cats put up five runs in the first on four hits. Cal Stevenson led off with a walk and Rivas followed with a one-out walk to put two men on for JJ Matijevic. Matijevic roped a double to left field to score Stevenson and move Rivas to first.

After Nick Quintana drew a walk, Cesar Salazar singled to left-center to score Matijevic and Rivas and make it 3-0. Oliva then laid down a bunt single, which scored Quintana. Cannon brought home Salazar on a single through the left side to cap the scoring in the first.

Arizona didn't stop there. The Cats added two more in the second. Rivas doubled with one out and then Matijevic launched a home run over the wall in right-center for a two-run home run to make it 7-0. The home run was the eighth of Matijevic's career and fifth at Hi Corbett. The Cats added two more an inning later courtesy of a Mitchell Morimoto RBI double and a Rivas RBI single.

Rio Gomez, Arizona's starting pitcher, allowed his first runs of the game in the fourth, when he gave up two runs, one of which was unearned. Gomez gave up another in the fifth, but did more than enough to earn his first win of the season. The junior left-hander went five innings, giving up two earned runs, one walk and striking out six. He's now 6-0 in his career.

Leading 9-2, Arizona got Gomez four more runs in the fourth. After Cannon tripled to score Oliva and shortstop Louis Boyd singled to score Cannon, Stevenson reached on a fielder's choice. Morimoto, the next batter, hit his first career home run to left-center for a two run shot to make it 13-2.

Arizona again put up a crooked number in the fifth, scoring five more. Oliva led off with a double and Boyd and freshman Matt Fraizer followed with walks. Cory Voss then drew a bases loaded walk to plate a run and Rivas followed with a three-run double. Matijevic reached on an error to score Rivas and finish the scoring for the Cats at 18.

Right-handed pitchers Juan Aguilera, Ryan Gowens and Preston Price all made their Arizona debuts after Gomez's start and combined for four innings, allowing one run on three hits and five strikeouts.

Cannon, making his first career start, went 4 for 6 with two RBI and a run scored. Oliva went 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Rivas was a perfect 3 for 3 with four RBI, two walks and three runs scored. Matijevic went 2 for 5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Morimoto was 2 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored.

So far through three games this season, Arizona is batting .381 with 45 hits, 14 doubles, three triples, two home runs and 37 RBI.

The Cats will look to keep the bats hot Monday morning when they go for the four-game sweep of Eastern Kentucky. First pitch is set for 10 a.m.
