You've got bright colours in your bedroom

Sorry, rainbow lovers - having a stimulating colour in your bedroom could be a one-way ticket to No Sleep City. A study conducted by Travelodge showed that people who slept in blue rooms got an average of 7 hours 52 minutes sleep - pretty damn close to the recommended eight hours - whilst people with brighter colours like purple got as little as 5 hours 56 minutes shut eye.

Oh, and FYI, the research also found that people with a caramel coloured room had sex an average of three times per week, compared to just once a week if their bedroom walls were red. Just sayin'.

You've got clutter everywhere

Neuroscientists at Princeton University looked at the performance of a group of participants in an organised and a disorganised advice, and found that clutter seriously impacted their productivity, and spiked their stress levels to boot.

We're not going to go all Marie Kondo on your ass, but when you consider that clutter has been shown to make it more difficult to concentrate, stop you relaxing, and generate feelings of guilt and embarrassment, spending an afternoon clearing out your wardrobe or emptying the overflowing drawers in your desk could make more of a difference than you might expect.

You don't have any houseplants

According to studies conducted by the Agricultural University of Norway, having plants in your house can help to prevent colds, sore throats and dry coughs, and that's not all. Plants improve the air quality in your space, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing the oxygen that our bodies need, and they can even make you feel better if the dreaded lurgy does hit. Texas A&M University found that people who looked after plants after a medical procedure often had a reduced recovery time. Not bad for something so pretty and Instagrammable, right?

You're overdoing the scented candles

Suffering from sudden headaches? Your candle addiction could be to blame. Scent from your washing powder, deodorant, air fresheners and crucially, your scented candles can be known triggers of migraines, and even if they're not lit, the perfume can have an impact.

Some people with a fragrance sensitivity also report suffering from unexplained watery eyes, stuffy noses and tight chests before realising that they need to ditch their Diptique, so if that sounds familiar, you may need to clear your mantlepiece too.

Your pictures aren't on display

Research conducted at the University of Portsmouth says that looking through old photographs on social media can be a source of comfort and happiness - so why wouldn't you have some snaps out on display as well as online? Psychologist Dr Clare Wilson, who worked on the study, explains: 'The pictures we often post are reminders of a positive past event. When in the grips of a negative mood, it is too easy to forget how good we often feel. Our positive posts can remind us of this.'

Your kitchen is a state

In 2016, a study published in the journal Environment and Behaviour asked groups of participants to work in two kitchens - one messy, one clean and organised - and recall a time when they felt 'out of control'. Those in the tidy kitchen consumed around 100 less calories than those in the chaotic one, suggesting that keeping your kitchen in order could actually help you to regulate your appetite and stop eating when you're full, avoiding unnecessary weight gain. So you'll find us in ours with a scourer and some anti-bac, naturally.

Your lighting isn't cutting it

Too much artificial lighting can interfere with your levels of melatonin, the hormone which promotes healthy sleep rhythms, so where possible, you should get your light from natural sources like large windows. And remember, it's not just the light from bulbs that can have an impact - ditch TVs from your bedrooms and turn off your technology at least an hour before you want to nod off, as the blue light they emit can also interfere with your cycle.
