Rugged Engine Performance
When it comes to off-road adventure, both the 2017 Jeep Cherokee and 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee are well muscled. However, engine size differs majorly. The Cherokee comes with a MultiAir inline 4-cylinder that maintains 28 highway MPG and 21 city MPG.1
The Grand Cherokee is equipped with a 6-cylinder engine. While this V6 is supported by an efficient stop-start dual battery system, it can only achieve 26 highway MPG and 19 city MPG.2
Although the lower mileage in the Grand Cherokee may bother some, it more than makes up for it with increased horsepower (293 to its counterpart’s 184).
Jeep Towing and Off-Road Capabilities
With such a difference in engine size, there will also be a considerable difference in towing capability. The Cherokee, equipped with Trailer Sway Damping and a normal duty suspension, can haul up to 4,500 pounds.3 The Grand Cherokee, with Eco suspension, can tow up to 6,200 pounds.4
Cargo loads may vary between these two Jeep models; however, each includes its own set of stability and roll mitigation controls to maintain handling. In fact, while it can haul less, the Jeep Cherokee may have an edge in stability, as it includes Jeep Active Drive I and Selec-Terrain®. The purpose of both these features is to heighten grip and steering precision on loose or slippery roads.

When it comes to convenient interior technologies, the most prominent asset of the Jeep Cherokee is the Uconnect® suite. This package includes a 5-inch LCD touchscreen, as well as a media hub with an SD reader, USB port, and auxiliary jack. With these features, you’ll have plenty of music to play over the 6-speaker audio system.
