Maximize Marketing News - February 2017

How to Brainstorm Blog Topics that will Wow Your Audience

The key to a successful blog is knowing who your readers are, what they need, and what they expect from you. Whether you’re an experienced blogger or just getting started, the number one thing you can do to improve your blog is to develop a strong understanding of your audience. Once you have a clear picture of who you’re writing for and what their interests are, you can begin to plan your content.

Blogging takes planning. Just sitting down and diving into your next post isn't an efficient way to work, and it doesn't produce high-quality content.

Savvy bloggers create lists of ideas to draw upon when it's time to write. They set aside specific times for blogging, often writing several posts in advance. They can then pre-schedule them in their blog or simply publish work they've already written when it's time to post.

Start by creating a list of topics using a program like Evernote, a paper notebook, or a simple text document on your computer, tablet or phone – whatever works best for you. Choose something you can easily update when new ideas come to you.
When you're brainstorming ideas and topics, capture as many ideas as possible. Then, go through your list and prioritize. Put the topics that are most relevant to your readers first.

For example, if you blog about living the digital nomad lifestyle, your audience might be interested in travel tips, learning languages, and ways to make money. But their biggest concern may be how to get started in the first place. If this is the case, that topic should be at the top of your list.

Keep in mind that not all your content has to be in the form of an article. You may also publish videos, infographics, podcast interviews, templates, and other types of content.

With so many blogs to choose from, people expect to receive greater value from what they read. Make your blog stand out by giving your audience what they want and need.

Your Homework

  1. Generate a list of potential blog post topics. It may be helpful to consider the following questions:
  • What have people asked you in workshops, emails, and consultations?
  • What are people in your target market talking about in forums or on social media?
  • What products do you frequently recommend to clients?
  • What books have you read lately that might be useful or inspiring to your clients?
  1. Prioritize your topics and choose one to work on this month.
