Hershey Med plans ER expansion

Hershey Medical Center is the only hospital in Central Pennsylvania with both an Adult Level I and a Pediatric Level I Trauma Center. While it currently serves about 75,000 patients per year, it is seeing an increase in emergency medicine patients.
On Friday the hospital appointed a design-build team consisting of Harrisburg-based Pyramid Construction Services Inc., part of Quandel Enterprises Inc., and a Philadelphia-based architect, EwingCole, according to spokesman Scott Gilbert.
Plans are moving forward after the medical center commissioned a consultant to outline an expansion and renovation plan feasibility study, which was completed in September 2016.
The expansion project would add patient care spaces, additional medical and trauma rooms, and other support spaces. It also would entail renovating 6,500 square feet in the existing emergency department as well as building a two-story addition.
The first floor of the addition would be approximately 9,900 square feet and the second floor would add 8,500 square feet, a news release said.
Hershey Medical Center expects the emergency department expansion will take place in two phases, with construction starting as early as fall 2017. Final phasing and timing has yet to be determined, a news release said.
