Vigil to mark Laufa’s 25th birthday

As it is the late Ruby Laufa’s 25th birthday today, a candlelight vigil will be held this evening at the spot of her tragedy.

Close friend Hanley Logoso told Loop PNG the event, to be held at 6.30pm at Fort Banner, UPNG, is mostly to celebrate Laufa’s birthday with friends, families or anyone her life had impacted.

“It’s basically anyone and everyone who has been a victim of violence against women or may know of someone who may have died as a result of any form of violence,” says Logoso.

“Ultimately we want to use this as a platform to send a strong message on violence against women.

“We would like you all to join us with your own candles as we say a prayer, play Ruby's song and release lanterns in her memory.

“For those that can't make it, please light a candle and say a prayer at that same time (6.30pm).”

Participants have been asked to dress in white.

The late Ruby Laufa passed away at the Port Moresby General Hospital on Saturday, February 11, at 3.30pm.

Facts into the former Miss PNG's death are still sketchy as police continue their investigations.

Charges are expected be laid against a suspect, who is in police custody, following an autopsy on Laufa’s body, which is set to take place today.

Ruby-Anne Shantelle Kila Laufa, born on February 13, 1992, in Port Moresby, was the Miss South Pacific PNG 2012-2013.

According to the Miss PNG Pacific Islands Facebook page, she studied law at UPNG and was owner of SKYLAR; a modelling agency and events management company.

Laufa leaves behind her father, Maurice, from Gulf province; her mother, Hane Sepi Nouairi-Schaaf, of Central province and Tongan-German blood, and her younger sisters, Sherridan and Rhani Villie-Maina.
