While Rogue One: A Star Wars Story followed a group of rebels on a secret mission to steal the Death Star plans, the Empire had its share of elite units as well. Their story will be told in a new novel by Christie Golden, set after the events of Rogue One and A New Hope.

Inferno Squad takes place after the destruction of the first Death Star, and follows a unit that is designed to infiltrate and take down the remaining elements of Saw Gerrera’s Partisans cell, which have been conducting strikes against the Empire. From the description, it looks like it will be putting a solid emphasis on the war part of Star Wars.

Putting the “war” in ‘Star Wars’

As someone who regularly suits up as one of the Empire’s soldiers, this is a book that is enormously appealing.

This book looks promising in part because Gerrera has become a pivotal figure in the Star Wars universe. His presence as an ideological extremist is an interesting one for the universe, as it helps to demonstrate the moral complexity that guided the Rebel Alliance. While the character died on the attack on Jedha in the first standalone film, he was recently introduced in the animated show Star Wars Rebels.

The book is authored by veteran Star Wars author Christie Golden, who has authored three installments of the Fate of the Jedi series (Omen, Allies, and Ascension), as well as an adaptation of an unreleased Clone Wars arc, Dark Disciple.

The Star Wars universe has had its share of morally-complicated adventures, some of which remain memorable entries to the now-defunct Expanded Universe, such as Karen Traviss’ Republic Commando novels, Timothy Zahn’s Allegiance, and Michael A. Stackpole’s X-Wing series. The new canon does have its share of combat novels, such as Battlefront: Twilight Company, and the novelization of Rogue One, both authored by Alexander Freed. Hopefully, this new entry in the universe will live up to their legacies.

Inferno Squad is slated for release on July 25th.
