Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat for 2017

We L-O-V-E to eat, and we’re passionate about great food. We know you are too! That’s why, every day, we work hard to make dining easier for our millions of users – they can order food for delivery or pickup through Yelp Eat24, or grab a table in advance using Yelp Reservations. Connecting people with great local businesses is a responsibility we take very seriously, especially when it comes to finding a place to get your grub on. With the help of our Yelp community, who contributed millions of reviews over the course of the past year, we are very excited to announce this year’s Top 100 Places to Eat.

In our fourth annual list we are honoring eateries from across the US, nearly all of which have a perfect 5-star rating. You may notice that most of these businesses are pretty unassuming, offering guests a no-frills type of dining experience, and yet Yelpers go nuts for them. On our past top 100 lists, you would be likely to find some of those “famous” restaurants with thousands of reviews, over many years, holding steady at 4.5 stars. This year, those places were crowded out by other businesses that performed spectacularly in the last year. This list is proof that you can find truly amazing food and service just about anywhere, so never judge a book – er, a sandwich? – by its cover.

Interestingly, over half of the businesses on this list opened in the past two years. Many have a couple hundred reviews, but they were nearly all 5-star reviews over the course of 2016. In fact, 96 out of the 100 businesses on this year’s list boast 5-star perfection. Nearly three quarters of our top 100 are fast casual businesses or food trucks, and at most of these hidden gems, you can enjoy a meal for $10 or under. What could possibly be better than that?

Left, top to bottom: #57 Aloha Shrimp in Hauula, HI;  #39 Back Draft Pizza in Bee Cave, TX; #71 Balam Mexican Kitchen in Lynwood, CA.

Right, top to bottom: #44 La Maison de Maggie in Las Vegas, NV; #1 Tony’s Italian Delicatessen in Montgomery, TX.

It’s pretty cool, if we do say so ourselves, how online reviews have allowed small businesses that offer great value and service to compete with larger restaurants and national chains boasting bigger advertising budgets. Yelp provides a free platform on which businesses can market their offerings and collect feedback from their customers. In our recent Small Business Pulse survey, we found that 96% of U.S. businesses say they collect customer feedback in some form, and 82% of restaurants report that they use online review sites like Yelp to do it, which was more than any other business category.

You’re going to want to make a note of these spots, so we made it easy for you. With our new bookmark collections feature, you can see the whole list in one place and follow it! To do so, open Top 100 Places To Eat 2017 on mobile (make sure to have the Yelp app downloaded!) and hit ‘follow’ once you’ve opened it in the app. Now you’ll always have the top 100 with you.

Methodology:

To determine Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in 2017, we looked at the reviews received by businesses in the restaurant and food truck categories, considering both the rating and volume of reviews. Unlike our list from last year, which looked at business performance since the founding of Yelp in 2004, this year we weighed more recent reviews more heavily and reduced the advantage that a business gains by having more reviews. This gives our overall list more of an “up-and-coming” feel, with fewer “famous” restaurants with thousands of reviews, and more hidden gems. We only considered the reviews by the users who are from the same country as the business. Businesses must be primarily a restaurant or place to eat a meal to be included on the list. If a business with multiple locations appears more than once on the list, we keep the highest ranked location and mention the others in a footnote.
