Biloxi Shuckers help restore Moss Point baseball field

MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) - They are normally behind the scenes workers for the Biloxi Shuckers, but on Friday morning, a volunteer team from the front office took the field in Moss Point.

However, they weren't there to play ball. The work crew from the Shuckers front office answered the call to help restore and improve the youth baseball field.

"We're very committed to giving back to the community, and we actually saw the story on WLOX where they needed some help. This was a perfect fit for us. We're passionate about serving the community, obviously passionate about baseball, so this was a perfect fit for our staff to come out and help," said Shuckers General Manager Chuck Arnold.

The Shuckers come from ticket sales, marketing, broadcasting, and creative services. Many have never laid sod before.

"You know, I can't say that I have. Usually, I'm in there editing on my computer, so this is a nice change of pace," said Amy Johnson, who works as the team's creative services director.

The head groundskeeper for the Shuckers is the foreman on the project, and says baseball is such an important part of growing up.

"Youth baseball is very important. It's the start of the game. It teaches kids teamwork and how to interact and work together with people," said Lairamore.

The project also means a lot to the community.

"This area out here has always gotten a bad reputation and we're here to change that perception of this area out here, and make it viable out here," said Redmond.

Along with the volunteer labor from the Biloxi Shuckers, several corporations provided donations to help get the field ready, including Lowe's and Turf Masters.

The first baseball games are scheduled for March.
