If there was any doubt that designers are using the runways to express their political views, it was put to rest during Missoni’s exuberant finale in Milan today. Angela Missoni ended her Fall 2017 show with models clad in Pussyhats, the hot pink symbols of protest and female solidarity that were created in honor of the Women’s March. Missoni’s variation on the hand-knit piece featured her family’s signature zig-zagging prints and bold stripes, but the pointed ears and bold rose color were unmistakable.

With famous faces such as Gigi Hadid, Jamie Bochert, and Missoni herself all donning the hats during the show’s final moments, the project is guaranteed to make headlines, though the underlying message wasn’t about fashion or its notable personalities per se. Dubbing the collection “pink is the new black” and asserting that women’s rights are human rights as she took her bow, Missoni kept the can-do spirit of the march alive. With some proceeds from the collection going to the American Civil Liberties Union and the UN Refugee Agency, the hats will serve a purpose beyond the symbolic.
