A US-based group White Sun that specialises in musical versions of yogic mantras has won the prestigious Grammy award in the New Age album category.
The Sikh members of the group- singer and songwriter Gurujas Kaur Khalsa and instrumentalist Harijiwan Singh Khalsa-both adorning Sikh turbans and attired in traditional Punjabi clothes walked on the stage accompanied by Adam Berry, the co-founder of the group.
Gurujas accepted the trophy at the 59th annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles for their album White Sun II which was a hit in 2016 and was a top charter at iTunes.
“We just want our music to make something better for somebody somewhere and it’s our dream to see this world become a more beautiful place. For anyone who shares that dream with us, thank you, we love you and let's do better,” she said while accepting the trophy.
The Grammy award-winning album White Sun II includes hymns from the Sikh Gurubani- Ik Ardas Waheguru, Dhan Dhan Ram Das Gur, Aap Sahaee Hoa Har Har Har, Simro Gobind, Gobinday Mukunday, Ajai Alai, Chattra Chakkra Varti, Suniai, Akal Instrumental and Hummee Hum Akal.
The group beat Enya and Vangelis to earn the Grammy in the highly competitive category.
The group also features a noted Indian-origin table player.
Abhiman Kaushal who is from Hyderabad in Telangana state in India, currently works as an adjunct professor at the University of California, Los Angeles.
