Special Education 101: 
A Training to Ensure Students with Special Needs 
Get the Right Services in School

Special Education 101 is a helpful road map for understanding how public schools can effectively serve the needs of students with special needs.  The course is beneficial for parents and professionals and illustrates how to:
  • effectively refer a child for special education services 
  • create individual education plans to serve a child's unique learning needs
  • ensure a child is served in the least restrictive environment experiencing the same opportunities for learning and growing that all students should have access to 
  • understand the local, state and federal laws governing public school, special education procedures. Child and parent rights are fully explained.

Participants receive a flash drive with:
  • PowerPoint Training Handouts
  • The Resource Guide for Children with Special Needs
  • IDEA, The Manual for Parents and Students about Special Education Services in Texas, 2012 (an 84 page, Special Education Manual)
  • Example letters/forms to use for requesting evaluations, records, services

-How to determine which related, supplementary and assistive technology services will benefit a student
-what type of  evaluations effectively measure the need for these services
-what federal and state law require for these services 
-How to create student service goals that can help foster success with these services
