SEO field is really amazing. Day in and day out, you will find many different updates related to search, search engines, keywords etc and so on. Today, with the increased use of mobile devices, nowadays a new term “Mobile SEO” is prevailing in the market.

Keeping this in mind, Google launched a new project known as “Accelerated Mobile Pages”. We will discuss here today what it is all about and how this can be useful for mobile SEO?

Accelerated Mobile Pages Project

AMP Your Content:

AMP refers to Accelerated Mobile Pages. Today, browsing web on the mobile phone has increased at such a faster speed that if your website takes more than 5 seconds to get loaded then users will quickly abandon the site.

This shows that something has to be changed and the change is “Accelerated Mobile Pages Project”; an initiative to boost the mobile web experience. Before six months, Google started sending people to AMP Pages in the “Top Stories” section of Google Search Result page on mobile phones.

And after that, AMP was globally adopted in every industry viz. News, Technology, e-Commerce, entertainment, travel and so on. At Present, Google has more than 150 million docs indexed with 4 million new ones being added every week.

Today, AMP support has increased over the entire search results page and is not just remaining to “Top Section” stories. AMP is not a ranking measure. This initiative was widely accepted by publishers and Google wanted it to make easier for other people to access this faster experience.

How AMP Works?

This is what makes AMP run so fast and get the websites loaded very quickly.

a)    Only Asynchronous scripts are allowed:  AMP allows asynchronous java scripts. Custom AMP elements handle interactive page features. Some of these elements may have javascript under the root however they are very nicely designed in such a manner that they don’t affect performance.

b)    All resources are sized statically:  Various external resources such as images, ads or iframes must show their size in AMP as this helps to identify the size of every element and keep it before resources are downloaded. Page layout is loaded without waiting for any other resources to get downloaded.

Here, document layout is separated from resource layout and only one HTTP request is required to draft the complete document. These are optimized to avoid unnecessary expensive style recalculations as well as layouts in the browser and hence there won’t be any redraft when the resources get loaded.

c)    All third party java scripts are to be kept out of critical path: With AMP, third party Java scripts are allowed only in sandboxed iframes. This is done to avoid blocking the execution of the main page.

d)    Doesn’t allow extension mechanisms obstruct rendering: With AMP, extension mechanisms cannot block pages from being rendered. Accelerated Mobile Pages support extensions for various things such as lightboxes, Instagram embeds, tweets etc.

e)    CSS must be inline and size bound:  With AMP, only inline styles are allowed and hence one or more HTTP requests are removed from critical rendering path as compared to most web pages.

f)    Efficient Font Triggering:  Generally, web fonts are huge in size and it’s difficult to render amazing performance by optimizing these web fonts. A normal web page has very few sync scripts and little external style sheets and till all this happens, a browser waits to start downloading.

In AMP, there’s no HTTP request till the font starts downloading and hence no HTTP request blocks the browser from downloading the fonts.

g)    Allows only GPU enabled animations: AMP allows only animating and transitioning on transform and opacity so that page layout is not needed. For animation related CSS, it is necessary for animations to be accelerated by GPU.

h)    Loading only what’s necessary: All resource downloads are controlled by AMP. It allows loading only what is needed. Once the resources are downloaded, downloads are quickly optimized so that most important ones are given first priority.

Images and ads are downloaded only if needed by the user.

Conclusion:  So, now if you really wish to have your website seen on top mobile search results then using AMP is the best option. With this, your mobile SEO will see a boost and your pages will be perfectly designed for mobile devices.
