'La La Land': Learn Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone's tap moves

Carly Mallenbaum
USA TODAY

If you've seen any advertisements for the musical film La La Land, you've no doubt come across a photo of Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling facing each other as the sun sets on a hilltop. It's a magical image, no?

This image of Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling appears on billboards and posters advertising 'La La Land.'

The image is from a scene in the movie where the lead actors are falling in love and flirting via song (called A Lovely Night) and dance (mostly tap). It's an entertaining number to watch, so we thought that would make it a fun routine to learn. That's where La La Land choreographer Mandy Moore (not the singer) comes in.

Moore crafted and taught Gosling and Stone all of the movie dances and agreed to go over the dreamy tap routine for USA TODAY readers, with the help of Melinda Sullivan and Dominique Kelley, dancers who worked on the movie.

Find a partner, put your tap shoes on and watch the video above for step-by-step instructions on how to perform the memorable La La Land dance.

Need to go back and repeat steps? (After all, Gosling and Stone trained for months to learn the movie dances.) Here are some time codes to jump to:

Step 1  (0:23)

  • Step forward with your right leg
  • Chug your heel into the ground
  • Step back
  • Turn and face your partner (180 or 360 degrees)

Step 2 (0:44)

  • Step, chug while facing each other
  • Do the airplane arms from the movie poster

Step 3 (1:01)

  • Stomp, brush, step, stomp, brush, step, stomp

Step 4 (1:23) The hard part

  • While turning clockwise: step, toe, hop, step, brush, step, step
  • Step, scuff, step, step, step, step,
  • That sequence, counter-clockwise, with you and your partner dance around each other
  • And again, clockwise, then counter-clockwise, then clockwise
  • Turn 180/360 toward each other for an intimate moment... then the phone rings!
