Beginning Monday, residents in New York state can electronically file their income tax.

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance has joined the Free File Alliance to offer residents more options to electronically prepare and file both their federal and state income tax returns at no cost.

Taxpayers in New York state with a household income of $64,000 or less in 2016 qualify to use the state's free file software. Click here for the free software.

The Tax Department is also hosting 54 Facilitated-Self Assistance sites throughout the state, during the filing season. The sites will be staffed with experts who are available to guide taxpayers through their tax preparation and filing.

The deadline to file taxes is April 18.
