Outcry after Chinese tourists ‘steal’ Donald Duck’s sweets
Decorative candies nabbed from statue of the cartoon character at Disney resort in Shanghai
Photographs of how tourists stole decorative sweets from a tray held by a Donald Duck statue at Shanghai Disneyland went viral on the internet, with many criticising their dishonesty.
The resort set up the statue as part of decorations to mark the forthcoming Lunar New Year holiday.
The sweets were largely decorative as they were made of plastic foam placed in candy wrappers, but that did not stop tourists stealing them for souvenirs.
A set of photographs which documented the thefts attracted huge attention online, showing Donald Duck holding a full stack of candy on the first day and left with an almost empty plate three days later.
The website of the state news agency Xinhua also reported the story on social media and parents were quoted as saying they stole the sweets simply because their children asked for them.
Many social media users criticised the parents for not disciplining their children.
One social media user said he felt embarrassed as a Chinese citizen that so many of his fellow compatriots lacked the most basic decorum as to how to behave in public.
Another social media user wrote: “If you can’t discipline your own hands, you shouldn’t have them.”
