It's official – The Crystal Maze is returning to Channel 4 for a brand new full series!

Following recent reports, it's now been confirmed that The IT Crowd's Richard Ayoade will be stepping in to host 20 hour-long episodes later this year.

The new series will be filmed at a purpose-built maze in Bristol that's being created by the original Crystal Maze designer James Dillon and spans over 30,000 square feet. So that's a lot of running between rooms.

Teams of five contestants will travel through the classic Aztec, Medieval, Future and Industrial zones (sorry, Ocean fans), taking on physical, skill, mental and mystery challenges. And then, of course, heading TOOOO THE CRYSTAL DOOOOME.

It comes after the success of the one-off celebrity revival last year for Stand Up to Cancer, which was filmed at the Crystal Maze live experience attraction in London. The upcoming series will also include some celeb specials for the charity.

Ayoade follows in the footsteps of the iconic Richard O'Brien, Ed Tudor-Pole and Stephen Merchant, who hosted the Stand Up to Cancer edition.

Tom Beck, Head of Live & Events at Channel 4, said: "The Stand Up to Cancer special was so brilliant and so successful that commissioning a series of The Crystal Maze was almost a no-brainer.

"And I couldn't be more pleased and excited that Richard has agreed to become the new Maze Master – he's an inspired choice."

The new series, from RDF Television's Fizz team, will be announcing details on how to be a contestant soon.

But if you just can't wait, the Crystal Maze live attraction is currently going great guns in London, with a second, even bigger version to open in Manchester in April. Go on, have a go... Mumsy would be proud.
