  1. Optional: If you would like to plan out your flower ahead of time, take your tailor’s chalk or similar fabric marking tool and draw your desired flower outline onto the fabric. This outline should have a center and lines and/or dots to indicate where you would like the petals to land.

  2. Bring your thread through the fabric from the back to the front. The position of this first puncture will be the center of your embroidered flower.

  3. Position your needle right next to your first puncture, almost directly on top of it, and push it from the front to the back of your fabric. Do not pull your thread the whole way through. Instead, leave a loop on the front side of your fabric that is the desired size of your flower’s petal.

  4. Position your needle at the outermost tip of your flower petal, and push your needle from the back of the fabric to the front. Put the needle through the petal’s loop. Pull the thread just tight enough that the petal’s thread is not pulled completely taut.

  5. Place your needle directly on the outer side of the petal loop, as close to your last stitch as possible. Push the needle from the front of the fabric to the back and pull completely taut. This should secure the petal in place.

  6. Place your needle as close to your first puncture (the center of the embroidered flower), and push it from the back of the fabric to the front.

  7. Repeat Steps 2-5 until you have a full flower with the desired number of petals. 5-6 petals are most frequently used to make a full lazy daisy stitch, though you can add more by pulling the petal loop tauter in Steps 3-4.
