It's confirmed: Melania Trump has chosen to wear Ralph Lauren for the inauguration of her husband Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States.
The powder blue skirt suit, which features a cocoon-like jacket, is a custom designer from the American designer. Teamed with matching gloves, a box clutch and court shoe heels, as well as chic diamond earrings and a neat low chignon, the new First Lady's 60s style recalled her famous predecessor - Jackie Kennedy. The future fashion icon wore a white-caped gown for her husband's inauguration in 1961, chosen so that it would stand out against the background in the black and white images of the time.
Of course, there was no doubt that Mrs. Trump would choose to 'wear American' for the momentous occasion - it's pretty much a prerequisite - but what is surprising is her deviation from her usual style. The Slovenian-born model usually favours more modern designs, recently wearing two jumpsuits - a one-shouldered white one and a black pussy-bow blouse one - for election night and the last debate respectively.
The move is also a surprising sign of unity for Hillary Clinton, who is also rumoured to be wearing the designer for today's event.
The timing of the unveiling of her new look is also poignant for another reason - today marks the release of Jackie, the film starring Natalie Portman about the life of the iconic First Lady.
As reported by WWD earlier today, two designers have worked on pieces for Melania to wear for the inauguration - Ralph Lauren and Karl Lagerfeld. This means that in all likelihood, we can expect her to wear the latter for the inauguration ball this evening.
If last night's gold sequinned Reem Acra gown is anything to go by, we're expecting big things.
