The Most Affordable Places to Travel in 2017

If you want to save money on travel, you’ll do well to focus on the costliest expenses, typically airfare and lodging. In their 2017 Travel Hacker Guide, Kayak names the top cities for affordable travel this year, considering those factors.

Kayak ranked their cities by flight price, but the median hotel rates in these cities were all fairly affordable, too. To come up with their numbers, they analyzed over a billion travel searches. While past performance doesn’t guarantee anything, it does offer a decent gauge. Kayak has also listed each city’s median rates by month, so you can see how prices fluctuate throughout the year. Here were the top five most affordable cities on their list, along with the median airfare for January.

Cartagena, Colombia: Flights range from $397 in January to $748 in December. May seems to be the cheapest time to fly, with flights at $399 and hotels at $125.

Quito, Ecuador: Flights are as low as $466 in October and jump to $636 in December. Hotels are about $100 throughout the year. If you visit in April, the median flight price is $475 and hotels are $98.

Reykjavik, Iceland: Reykjavik is cheaper toward the end of the year, with median flight prices at $479 and hotels at $165 in October. In July, the median price for flights is $704 and $215 for hotels.

Lima, Peru: Median flight prices hover at just below $600 for most of the year (though in December, they jump to $786. In January and February, median hotel prices are just $90 and $91, respectively, and overall, April seems one of the cheapest times to fly, with median flights at $560 and hotels at $106.
