David Modell, 55, Former Baltimore Ravens President

Modell oversaw the naming of the Baltimore Ravens and helped shape the franchise.

Former Baltimore Ravens President David Modell died Jan. 13, 2017, after battling lung cancer. He was 55.

Since he was a teen, David Modell worked in various capacities for his father Art Modell, who owned the Cleveland Browns and later the Ravens. He served as the president of the Ravens from 1996 to 2004, when current owner Steve Bisciotti purchased the franchise.

During his time as president of the Ravens, David Modell helped broker contracts, coordinated the opening of M&T Bank Stadium and pushed for fan involvement in determining everything from the team's colors to its name.

"Much of what the Ravens are today can be traced to David and what he directed and established," Bisciotti said in a statement upon David Modell's passing.

Following the sale of the team in 2004, David Modell was chair of 3-D production company 3ality Digital.

David Modell is survived by his wife, Michel, and their twins, daughter “Fee” (Aoife) and son “Bertie” (Bertram). He is also survived by children from his first marriage: daughters Breslin and Collier and sons Arthur and David Jr. He’s also survived by his older brother John. He was predeceased by father Art Modell, who died in 2012, and mother Patricia Breslin, an actress who died in 2011.

Visitation for David Modell will be from 9:30 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 409 Cathedral St., Baltimore, MD 21201. A funeral mass will follow at 10 a.m. at the basilica.

There will be a larger-scale visitation open to Ravens nation from noon to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at M&T Bank Stadium, 1101 Russell St, Baltimore, MD 21230.
