In a glossy magazine interview this week, the former Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson, one of the world’s best-paid entertainers, said his daughter was better off without a mother, because he, as a single father, was in a position to protect her from “all those shitty things mums do”.

In a searing, warts-and-all confessional, the controversial woolly-haired motoring journalist said: “I sometimes think I should get a nanny but my daughter has a lot of bird time with neighbouring mums and that is quite enough.”

“It’s good to have strong men around a girl to teach her to respect men,” Clarkson went on. “She doesn’t have some female person around saying, ‘I just love you in those shoes’ or ‘You should talk about your emotions
