Paul Verhoeven will head up the international jury for the 2017 Berlin International Film Festival.
The director of such box office hits as Basic Instinct, RoboCop and Starship Troopers, Verhoeven recently has enjoyed a critical resurgence with Elle, his first French-language film. The drama, starring Isabelle Huppert, premiered in Cannes this year and is France’s entry for the best foreign-language film category of the 2017 Oscars.
Verhoeven, who is Dutch, will head up the jury for the 67th Berlin International Film Festival, which runs Feb. 9-17, 2017.
“With Paul Verhoeven as jury president, we have a filmmaker who has worked in a variety of genres in Europe and Hollywood. His creative, multifaceted boldness and his willingness to experiment are reflected in the spectrum of his works,” said Berlin Festival director Dieter Kosslick in a statement.
Verhoeven began his directing career in the 1970s in his native Holland, most famously with back-to-back hits Turkish Delight (1973), an erotic thriller that was nominated for an Oscar, and his international breakthrough Soldier of Orange (1977), which picked up a Golden Globe nomination.
His Hollywood career included some of the most influential, and successful, films of the late 80s and early 90s, including RoboCop (1987), Total Recall (1990), Basic Instinct (1992) and Starship Troopers (1997). More recently, Verhoeven has returned to Europe, making the WWII drama Black Book (2006) and now Elle, which has been hailed by critics as a return to form for the 78-year-old helmer.
