Heating System Winter Checkup

Winter is coming. There’s no denying it. Before we know it, we’ll be huddled around the fireplace with blankets over our knees while the weather forecaster delivers the usual end-of-the-world coverage. So how can you be sure that your home is ready to tackle the winter weather? Follow these tips to ensure your home heating system is operating properly:

  • Change the air filter
Regularly checking your air filter is important. It is recommended to
replace it every 1-2 months. A dirty filter can interfere with the airflow and reduce the energy efficiency of your system. How Often Should You Replace Your Home Air Filter?
  • Test your thermostat
On a cool morning, try turning on the heat to test your thermostat’s accuracy. If your thermostat is reading inaccurately, you could be wasting energy. By running a simple test, you can ensure your house is reaching its full comfort potential.
  • Soundcheck
Turn your unit on and check for unusual sounds, like banging or rattling. If you hear something troubling, you may want to contact a certified HVAC technician from Bardi Heating, Cooling & Plumbing to assess the situation. A technician will perform a variety of diagnostic procedures in addition to regular maintenance. This will ensure that all parts are cleaned, drained, and lubricated and all assembly and burner controls are working correctly.
  • Heating system not working at all
Heating system failures can be caused by a tripped breaker or blown fuse. Switch your thermostat to the “off” position, replace the fuse or reset the breaker, then check to see if the blower fan works when you turn the system on. If you have a gas furnace, be sure to check the pilot light.
