The penultimate episode of BBC One's utterly gripping drama has wandered into new territory and set up next week's finale in the most disturbing of fashions.

This week's instalment of The Missing took us back to Iraq in 1991 with younger versions of Adrian Stone, Henry Reed, Nadia Herz and Adam Gettrick, spending the longest time in one place for the show so far.

And no wonder. What a story they have to tell. Hearty congratulations on the casting of Thomas Arnold as the younger Adrian Stone, who does an extraordinarily effective Roger Allam impression.

If you managed to get to sleep after the ep, then you did a better job than us. The last ten minutes or so were a startling jump into the horror genre, with a final shot that will linger in our nightmares...

While we recover, let's ponder this week's big questions.

The Missing series two: Questions and theories

1. "Banging" the locals?

While not comfortable with it, Nadia (then Major Evett) is resigned to the fact that soldiers are becoming intimate with the inhabitants close to Camp Jambar, where the army was stationed. Is she envious/annoyed that the men get to go back to their "wives and girlfriends" after such behaviour?

2. Why did Nadia leave Gettrick "out to die"?

Was this a simple mistake from the Major? She did appear to be bitter about his activities. "He's a big boy," she spits at Adrian and Henry while going on to mention STDs. Was she jealous? Did she have a thing for Gettrick?

Curiously, upon discovery, he was understandably angry at being left for four days (and not out on walkabout as suggested). "She was supposed to protect us!" he screamed. Was she punishing him? Did she know he was having sex with a 13-year-old girl?

3. By saving Gettrick, Henry and Adrian caused more problems

Henry clearly felt guilt over the whole situation, which is why he sent money regularly to Iraq. Is this why Henry killed himself – out of guilt? Or was he going to talk and was killed by either Adrian or Gettrick?

4, Did Gettrick frame the butcher?

It seems outlandish, but possible. Was Gettrick so obsessed with revenge that he played the long game on Nadia? He could easily have stolen Herz's camera and replaced it, inserting the pic of Sophie. But, knowing Gettrick, if he was that set on revenge, surely he would have exacted revenge on Nadia and not her husband?

5. Another girl burned to death

Cheery, this series, isn't it?

6. Why does Sam Webster not see what Gemma does in the rollercoaster photo?

Sam (David Morrissey) is adamant that the girl in the picture is not his dead daughter Alice. Is he merely in denial, or is he hiding something?

7. Young Adam Gettrick met Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Okay, not really a question. Brian Vernel plays the younger version of the creepy Scottish abductor and could be seen as Bala-Tik, on the hunt for Harrison Ford's character in The Force Awakens. Vernel also starred alongside Keeley Hawes in 2015's The Casual Vacancy.

8. Is Mr Squiggles involved?

Did he see too much and Gettrick and left him behind? Lucy's favourite toy did keep quiet when discovered by Gemma Webster (Keeley Hawes) and Julien Baptiste.

9. OMG BAPTISTE'S WIFE MENTIONED TONY HUGHES!

For those who have perhaps not watched the first series of The Missing, Tony was the father who lost his son Oliver. Played by James Nesbitt, Hughes never truly believed his son died.

Celia Baptiste fittingly compares the two men and their obsession –"lost in all the darkness thinking you can fix everything". Will this series end with Julien searching endlessly from house to house, too?

10. Reappearance of the monkey toy

Before this instalment's big reveal, we get a clue with the monkey toy. Back in the second episode, Sophie (pretending to be Alice) took one into her brother's room as a reminder of their younger days.

11. "You will be good, won't you Alice?"

ARGH! So she's been alive all this time and kept in the basement by Gettrick. Now, if we go back a few episodes, Lucy (who we have assumed to be Sophie's daughter) drew a pic of her with her mother in the basement...

Is Alice her real mother? Is this why she's being kept? We know that Sophie did have a child, according to the army – but is this another ruse? She did seem quite convincing when retelling the story to the Websters (though, she was quite convincing with everything).

If not, just why is Alice being kept alive? We've seen Gettrick is not opposed to killing.

But this leads us to ask…

12. Where is Lena Garber?

Lena was the third girl in the rollercoaster pic with Alice and Sophie. Is she going to turn up in another room too? Or was she the body used when the Websters' shed was burned down? Or, could it be that she's out there somewhere…?
