What Can We Expect from President Trump’s Foreign Policy?

One of the earliest indications we will have of what kind of foreign policy President Donald Trump will pursue will be in the kinds of personnel choices he makes over the next several weeks. If he nominates more mainstream conservatives and Republican voices to key posts like Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense and National Security Advisor we can expect some profound shifts in US foreign policy but nothing radical. On the other hand, if other cadres of advisors fill these rolls there will be a great deal of uncertainty around America’s role in the world.

Whatever the case, President Trump will likely face a number of key foreign policy challenges upon taking office. On the line with me to discuss the implications of a Trump presidency to America’s role in the world is Heather Hurlburt of the New America Foundation. Heather and I have a pretty wide ranging discussion about the future of American alliances, the conflict in Syria, the status of the Iran nuclear deal, and some early decisions President Trump may take that could profoundly effect the lives of some of the most vulnerable people on the planet.
