You may know bergamot best from the tea flavor Earl Grey; but bergamot essential oil offers so much more!

Bergamot fruit is a time-honored, exquisitely fragranced orange that now comes mainly from Italy and the Ivory Coast of Africa. The word bergamot may have meant “the prince of pears,” or the “prince’s pear,” a label originating from the Turkish labels beg-armudi or beg armut.

The small fruit growing from small trees resembles either a round lime or small orange and it is sour and very bitter. It is the fragrance and flavor that have been used extensively throughout history in trade.

You may know the familiar flavor of bergamot from drinking Earl Grey tea. It is rumored that Britain allowed the use of bergamot as a way to mask cheap tea in order to imitate high quality Chinese teas. What a shame bergamot wasn’t instead embraced for all its real power.

Depression and Anxiety – When combined with lavender essential oil and massaged into the skin, it was found to significantly decrease pulse rate, cystolic and diastolic blood pressure. Subjects rated themselves as more calm and relaxed.

Relaxation – When combined with listening to soft music it was found to be an effective method of relaxation. In one study, there was a shift of the autonomic balance toward parasympathetic activity.

Blood pressure, hypertension, cortisol stress – Inhaling bergamot reduces psychological stress responses and serum cortisol levels as well as blood pressure for people who have essential hypertension.

Anxiety – In another study pointing toward bergamot’s abilities to help with anxiety, both bergamot and diazepam helped reduce the corticosterone response to stress in rats as well as their anxiety-based behavior.

Psoriasis – When used in combination with broadband UVB and UVB treatments, bergamot oil appears to helps speed up the effects of the treatments. (For this reason, be very cautious if using bergamot for skincare as it is said to increase the effects of the sun.)

Cancer – Bergamot essential oil and its fractions have been found to exhibit anti-cancer properties in vitro. Liposomal bergamot essential oil (BEO) had an impact on human neuroblastoma cells.

Specific vascular disorders – Vascular disorders where there is perforation of smooth muscle cells and oxyLDL-related endothelial cell dysfunction may be aided with bergamot oil due to its antioxidant benefits.

Morphine-induced toleranceBergamot essential oil slowed down the tolerance to morphine and re-established the activity of glutamate levels. Bergamot oil combined with bergamot poly-phenolic-fraction aid in the restoration of opioids analgesic efficacy.

Anti-inflammatory properties – Bergamot has a significant anti-inflammatory effect and that’s about all there is to it!

Stress Relief – It soothes the autonomic nervous system creating significant stress relief.

Neuroprotection – Bergamot oil reduces neuronal damage by excitotoxic stimuli. This property was connected to the in vitro prevention of “injury-induced engagement of critical death pathways.” Food additives like MSG and aspartame artificial sweetener are excitotoxins i.e., they can kill off brain cells.

There is some evidence that bergamot might useful in the treatment of chronic pain in various forms in combination with other substances.

In Italian folk medicine, bergamot has been used for fever and parasitic diseases as well as all these: mouth, skin, respiratory and urinary tract infections, leucorrhoea, gonococcal infections, vaginal pruritis (itching), sore throats and tonsillitis.
