Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: the sequel’s first trailer features Gamora in battle, and yes, baby Groot

Starlord and company return to save the galaxy in May 2017.

"There are two types of beings in the universe: those who dance, and those who do not."

So says our first real look at Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the highly anticipated sequel to director James Gunn’s 2014 hit Guardians of the Galaxy. The earlier film not only launched Chris Pratt’s career into the stratosphere, but proved once again — as Iron Man did before it — that superhero movies don’t have to take themselves too seriously to be great.

Plot details about Vol. 2 are scarce, save for the fact that the Guardians will be unraveling the mystery of where, exactly, Starlord, a.k.a. Peter Quill (Pratt), came from. The teaser reveals new — and beautiful — sides of the extraterrestrial universe that the first Guardians introduced.

We also get a new look at how badass Gamora (Zoe Saldana) is in battle. What and where she’s fighting is a mystery, but our current — and potentially awesome — best guess is Thor’s home world of Asgard, maybe (hopefully) to face down omnipresent Marvel villain, Thanos.

The teaser even offers a taste of where Gamora’s tentative relationship with Quill is headed, as he receives some unsolicited advice from Drax: "You need to find a woman who’s pathetic. Like you."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will feature much of the cast from the first movie, like Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket Raccoon and Karen Gillan as Nebula. But it’s also welcoming some newcomers to the Marvel cinematic universe, including Nathan Fillion, Elizabeth Debicki, Kurt Russell, and Sylvester Stallone.

Also: yes, Groot is back in action, and according to the end of this trailer and the teaser poster Gunn released on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to accompany the teaser, everyone’s favorite self-affirming tree alien is still a tiny little sprout of joy.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be released on May 5, 2017.
